Shawn Winsor is a bioethicist working in clinical practice, public policy, research, and education. Shawn’s specialty is reproductive health. He co-founded the Ethics Programs at TRIO Fertility (Toronto) and The Reproductive Care Centre (Mississauga-Oakville), and is founding chair of the Ethics-Law Group of the national society of specialists in assisted reproductive medicine – the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society. Prior to his current position as the Ethicist at TRIO he was Director of the Ethics Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Toronto) and the head of the Ethics Program at Trillium Health Partners (Toronto-Mississauga) where he founded the multi-hospital Regional Ethics Program. In the area of public policy, Shawn is a member of the Ontario Genetics Advisory Committee and the Decision Determinants Committee of the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee. Both groups report to Ontario Health, the agency in Ontario mandated to advise government and health care providers on the evidence to support investment in health programs and technologies. He is an expert reviewer for the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technology in Health, an advisor to the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care, and consults to organizations across North America on health policy. In the areas of research and education, Shawn is a Member of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and an Affiliate of the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto, and has taught in its Department of Philosophy on topics in bioethics, genetics, and human reproduction. Shawn’s bioethics training includes an MHSc in Bioethics (2003) and a post-graduate Clinical Ethics Fellowship (2004), both from the University of Toronto. He is currently a Vanier Canada Scholar at the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis at McMaster University, where he is in the final year of his PhD conducting research into how social and ethical values inform governments’ assessment of assisted reproductive health technologies.
